60 Minutes: Stem Cell Charlatans

I can truly sympathize with those who've been diagnosed with terminal conditions and have been told there's nothing medical science can do to help. I think I can also understand the will to fight back and find a cure. It's normal to want to get a second, or even third, opinion from a different medical provider.

But please, don't fall prey to unscrupulous charlatans and quacks looking to line their own pockets from your unfortunate circumstances. Stick with licensed, reputable medical providers whom use approved, scientific, evidence-based medicine. Remember - there are no such things as Z-rays.

  1. Alfred Sapse, an unlicensed physician described as a “modern-day Dr. Frankenstein,” was sentenced to 17 ½ years in federal prison Tuesday in a scheme to defraud chronically ill patients through an experimental stem cell implant procedure.

“What I’m hearing now is that you still believe in this quackery that you promoted,” the judge said in handing down the stiff prison term. “What you did was abhorrent without regard for the individuals you were treating.”

A jury in November convicted Sapse and his late co-defendant, longtime Henderson pediatrician Ralph Conti, of conspiracy and fraud charges in the implant scheme.
